The Washington Redskins acquired defensive end Erasmus James on Tuesday for a conditional seventh-round draft pick, a low-risk deal for a former first-round pick whose career is threatened by a pair of serious knee injuries.
The Vikings announced on Friday that they were placing James on waivers after he failed to pass a physical, but the Redskins called before the paperwork was filed. Minnesota will receive a selection in the final round of next year’s draft if James makes Washington’s 53-man roster.
James was the No. 18 overall pick in 2005 and had four sacks as a rookie, but he tore a ligament in his left knee in Week 2 of the 2006 season. He playing sparingly last year before reinjuring his ACL in Week 13.
With the Redskins, James will be reunited with defensive line coach John Palermo, who was an assistant at Wisconsin when James was chosen as the Big Ten defensive player of the year.

Defensive tackle Justin Harrell, the Packers’ No. 1 draft pick in 2007, will miss all of the organized team activities while he recovers from minor back surgery.
Harrell said Wednesday after the team’s third OTA and second practice that he hurt himself lifting weights and had outpatient surgery to correct a disk problem a little over a month ago.
He hopes to be ready for training camp.
“I was walking three miles a day the day after the surgery,” he said. “The only thing is you’ve just got to stay active and keep doing things that you can do and just make sure you keep everything intact and when it’s time to go, it’s time to go.”
Harrell also missed OTAs last season while recovering from a torn biceps muscle he hurt in the second game of his senior season at Tennessee. The injury made him a surprise pick when the Packers selected him at No. 16 overall.
He said he realizes he may get the label as being injury-prone.
“I can’t worry about that,” said Harrell, who also missed five games with an injured ankle last year after he started the season on the inactive list. “I’m just trying to stay positive, I’m just trying to do what I can to make sure when training camp comes I’m ready to roll.”

The Denver Broncos’ quarterback camp opened Monday with Brandon Marshall running routes but catching no passes and Travis Henry out the first week with a pulled hamstring.
The Broncos feared that Marshall would miss the start of training camp in July after cutting an artery, a vein, a nerve, two tendons and three muscles in his right arm in an accident in March at a resort in Orlando, Fla.
“June 22 will be his first day he’s able to catch the football, which gives us plenty of time before we start our summer ball,” coach Mike Shanahan said.
Henry is expected back next Tuesday after pulling a hamstring during 100-yard drills Friday.
Marshall is key with Javon Walker out at wide receiver. Denver brought in some experience, signing Keary Colbert, Sami Parker and Darrell Jackson to play opposite Marshall.
“Anytime you lose a guy like Javon Walker like we did, you want to bring in some people you feel that can compete right away, some guys that have some experience,” Shanahan said. “You never have enough depth at that position. Hopefully we have more depth this year than we’ve had.”
