Husker Radio Updates

Nov 22

If you are a Nebraska Cornhuskers fan and like to listen to Husker Radio, you’ll be pleased to know that they are broadening their viewer range into Texas thanks to NTN Communications. NTN has delivered Nebraska Cornhusker football on the air for well over a decade now. Around 2005 NTN was in serious need of donations so they could continue to broadcast football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Husker Radio Broadcasts were originally paid for by a series of donations made by patron support as well as sponsorship donations made by a variety of businesses with direct connections to the University or the State of Nebraska.

The year 2004 was a tough one for Husker Radio. Less than 2 months before the start of the season, NTN was rejected by KSKY 660 AM, which was the home for Husker Radio since 1996. As of this time frame, the radio station was in jeopardy of closing its doors. Not only did they need monetary commitments from it’s members, but they needed lots of time commitments as well if they were going to stay around and make things work for everyone.

Producing an entire season of Husker Radio broadcasts isn’t an easy job at all. You are responsible for collecting money from advertisers to make sure you can afford to stay on the air. In the past, plenty of influential business owners with ties to the team or the State of Nebraska were able to meet the financial goals of Husker Radio. They were even able to reach the viewers in Texas. But the problem was many of them bailed out due to financial difficulties and couldn’t continue to provide to necessary support to keep the radio station afloat.

Bob Van Horn is a big player at Husker Radio and deserves credit for the many hours and sweat he put into making sure the radio station keep blasting out air waves to Nebraska and parts of Texas. From selling ads to raising funds to resolving technical issues that arose. It’s a hard job but someone has to do it. Try sitting through a Saturday without the Cornhuskers playing on it and that can amount to a very depressing situation as a football fan. And Nebraska is known for a high ratio of citizens who are also football enthusiasts. Our research as of a couple days ago shows NTN is going strong now and it looks like Husker Radio is doing great as well. Whatever NTN did, the Nebraska Cornhuskers look like they have a lot to look forward to.

Afraid Your Youth Will Get Seriously Injured Playing Football?

Nov 22

Who hasn’t heard of some kid getting brain damage or a spinal injury or broken bones while playing in a youth football league. You may have even heard a story on the news or read about it somewhere or somebodies mothers’, uncles’, cousin was injured and the story has been told over and over. It almost makes it seem as though these injuries happen all the time!

The truth is, youth football injuries are not as common as you would think. At least…the bad kind. Sure enough, the kids are going to get banged up a bit. It is youth football after all, but the injuries are much more likely to be a bruise or a scratch than a life altering injury.

Generally speaking, the older the kids get, the chance of injury increases. Not because of the youths age but because of the level of the youth football is more intense with the older aged kids. For example, kids involved in youth football in 8th grade are 4 times more likely to be injured than kids in 4th grade. This is due to increased body size and over all strength. The aggressiveness of the players goes up quite a bit in the older youth also. But even with that, the numbers of injuries are still low and the sport should be considered safe.

Youth football has been given a bad rap while soccer is considered safe. The funny thing is, soccer is the number one injury causing sport of all the youth sports but for some reason, it is just not thought of that way. The bottom line is, your child is no more likely to be injured playing football than he/she is in regular everyday recreation. With proper coaching, that teaches proper technique and the proper equipment, youth football is very safe.

Here’s a great example of someone who started playing football at a young age. Coach Bobby Bowden started young and became the winningest coach in the history of college football! Check out how it all began for him.

Best Dallas Cowboys Quarterbacks of All Time

Nov 22

This is my list of top five best cowboys quarterbacks of all time. It factors in winning and passing statistics.

5. Danny White: Starting quarterback for the cowboys in the 80’s. He was in one Pro Bowl and a three times All-Pro selection. He had a 81.7 passer rating and 21,959 yards passing. He took the team to two playoff games but lost to the St. Louis Rams in both.

4. Don Merideth: Went to three Pro Bowls and a two time All-Pro selection. He also won the Bert Bell award in 1966 as player of the year. He is in the cowboys ring of honor along side other Cowboy greats. Lead the cowboy to two championship games against the Packers, one being the “Ice Bowl”, but lost them both in heartbreaking fashion.

3. Tony Romo: Already has a passer rating of 97.6 with 59 touchdowns and only 34 picks. He has 7,746 yards passing. He is already been to the Pro Bowl twice. Romo set the record for season touchdown passes with 36 breaking Danny White’s record of 29. He has taken the Cowboys to the playoffs but lost one to the Seahawks and once to the Giants in the first rounds. Still has to prove himself in the playoffs but statistically is on par with the great cowboys quarterbacks. This is only his third year as starter for the Cowboys, so he has helped the team a lot in a short time.

2. Roger Staubach: Six time Pro Bowler and 2 times Superbowl Champion. Quite a gem for the Cowboys as he was picked in the tenth round of the draft. Won Player of the Year in 1971 and was a 5 times All-NFC Selection. He was also the MVP of Super Bowl VI.

1. Troy Aikman: Nearly edges out Staubach because of his stats and one more Super Bowl win. Sure Aikman was more rigid than Rodger, but he never lost a Superbowl like his counterpart did. He was a six times Pro Bowler as well. Plus he was a three times All-Pro selection. He maintained a career passer rating of 81.6 with 32,942 passing yards, a record that will be hard to break for Romo. He definitely had talent around him with Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin which helped. Don’t forget a great tight end in Jay Novachek. Romo has a great tight end in Witten, a great back in Marion Barber, and now two great wide receivers in Terrell Owens and Roy Williams. Unfortunately they have already lost 4 games this season and a dropping to the bottom of their division. A Super Bowl ring looks unlikely for Romo this year.
