Similarities between Sports Betting and Casino Games

Sep 30

Successful sports betting can be fun. Very successful sports betting can even supplement your income. That is normally not the case when it comes to casino games. Well, casino games can be entertaining, sure, but they won’t offer expected value in the long run.

However, it’s very difficult to be so successful at sports betting that you can make a living at it, unless you also get paid for consultation services. But you can give yourself a real chance at a positive expectation if you avoid some basic gambling pitfalls.

The Sure Thing

Unless a game is rigged, there is no such thing as a sure thing. If it’s rigged, you may get in big trouble if you know about it and take advantage without saying anything. This is true in any form of gambling.

Your betting choices should be based on your own research and opinions, and you should never bet more than you can afford to lose. A friend’s “hot tip” is not sufficient cause for you to lay the deed to your home on the line. And you naturally shouldn’t put your lifesavings on red because someone says he can sense the outcome of the next roulette spin. If you even consider that, you shouldn’t gamble at all.

Money Management

Just as with all types of gambling, money management is key. You should set aside a certain amount to play with each month and only bet a small portion of that on each wager you plan to make. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket and wager your entire bankroll on a single game or bet. You never know what might happen.

Favorite Teams and Games

If you are a sports bettor who has a favorite team, you should probably avoid bets involving this team. Your bias may cause you to make a bet that is not really merited by the research. This goes for both betting on and against your team. You may be particularly bitter after your team suffers a stinging loss and this may color your assessment of their potential in the next game.

The same goes for casino gambling. Don’t get married to a certain game or wager. Play the odds not the hunch.
